5 Jazz Brunches that Roar with Flavour

Get into the swing of things with the jazz soirees in Dubai

When one thinks of jazz or the Prohibition Era, they think speakeasies, bathtub gin and smokey nightclubs; possibly some sequins and feathers thrown in for good measure. And, it seems we are sentimental for this beautiful and golden age, and around Dubai, jazz-themed brunches seem to be taking the dining scene by storm and we couldn’t be happier about this.

The roaring 20’s conjures up images of elegance and opulence. A decade of indulgence, where social and political landscapes changed dramatically and economic prosperity swept across nations; prompting people to move into cities while the rise of ‘consumer society’ encouraged people to spend, spend, spend. And, they sure did. More people than ever before could afford cars and somehow along with this unprecedented wealth a new age of music was born. The Jazz Age. Her influence reaching far and wide; frenetically gathering momentum. “Flappers” or new modern woman and dapper men could be seen dancing in jazz clubs in cities across American and Europe, embracing new dances such as the flea hop, the Charleston, the blackbottom, and more. Jazz bands in nightclubs as well as more traditional establishments such as the Savoy in New York City and the Aragon in Chicago, encouraged people to get on board with this new trend and solidified jazz’ distinctive soundtrack to the age; defining this era of capitalistic and social freedom and underscoring the rebellion against The Prohibition Act.

So, if you are keen to get in on this fun trend, here is my list of restaurants that will get those feet tapping and inspire you with their verve and energy:

This place repeatedly gets good reviews time and time again. Based at the Jumeriah Zabeel Saray, this restaurant hosts quite a few different types of brunches that are of high quality and decent value. But, the one I recommend is the Imperium Saturday Jazz Brunch from 13h00 to 16h00 for AED 395 (with house bevvies). The food focuses on Louisiana, Creole and Cajun styles…so there is definitely an emphasis on spicy and vibrant flavours, and their New-Orleans jazz band will get you in a festive mood that befits a Saturday and will help you forget that you have to go back to work the next day.

Seafire Restaurant

Right out there at the tip of the Palm is a great restaurant that we cannot resist mentioning. Seafire is a decent place for a steak any night of the week but on two particular nights, things heat up and the vibe is even more special. Aimed at embracing and paying tribute to the jazz era, these might not strictly be brunches but are still worth checking out. Every Monday from 20h30, Seafire Jazz Night, you will get to see The Swing Revue perform. These guys are the real deal with their extraordinary talent. Versatile and supremely gifted, they will wow you with their instrumentation skills. A real pleasure.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for something special for your husband or boyfriend, surprise him with a date night at Seafire. For every Wednesday is the Sinatra Speakeasy Night from 20h00 to 23h00. Frank Sinatra was a huge fan of Jack Daniels and so this night is in recognition of that. You can eat unlimited Jack Babyback Ribs while other foods are also Jack Daniels inspired. The in-house band will delight you with Sinatra classics all through the evening. A really special way to treat someone; and, for 325 AED, we think it’s a bargain.

China Grill

A brand spanking new concept from China Grill has arrived and we are excited about it. Weekday nights have just got a whole lot more interesting for every Wednesday night at the Westin Mina Seyahi, China Grill is hosting the lively and entertaining Shanghai Surprise Jazz Dinner for only AED 250 from 20h00 to 24h00. You get to choose 4 courses and of course there are unlimited ‘speakeasy’ cocktails. A live jazz band will keep you entertained and the atmosphere is lively.

The DIFC is fast becoming ‘the’ place to be seen and there are no shortage of great restaurants offering up inspired menus. Bazxar is one such place and we just love it here. Fusing varied cuisines from around the world, Their Prohibition Brunch – priced at 395 AED with house bevvies – has the ultimate party vibe if that is what you are after on a Friday. Allowing you and your friends to get dolled up to the max and let loose those sequins that have been aching for an outing. The service is great and there is plenty of food, so no chance of leaving this place hungry. They just keep it coming until you pop. Cocktails are inspired by the Jazz era and we highly recommend their champagne cocktails.

Café Belge

Also, located in the heart of the DIFC at the Ritz Carlton, on the last Tuesday of every month, Café Belge offers a great Prosecco & Mussels package (priced at 350 AED) along with a four-piece jazz band that plays contemporary and modern standards. If you are in the mood to spoil yourself and perhaps your other half, go for the Oyster package at 750 AED. It’s all grand elegance at this beautiful establishment. Its opulent but minimalist style will set the tone for a classy night out; the perfect spot to impress someone special.

So, now that you know where to go, why don’t throw on your glad rags and live it up a little.

Keep dining!
