Enjoy a great meal at Weslodge Saloon at the JW Marriot Marquis
Looking for a great steak, rock n’ roll vibe and killer cocktails? Then look no further than the Weslodge Saloon at the JW Marriot Marquis. Keep Dining invited Nicole Lovelock Mears for dinner then had a good chat afterwards in order to give our readers feedback on the American/Canadian themed restaurant.
Nicole has been in Dubai for 18 months and loves living here, as you can tell from her fabulous Instagram feed! She is also a restaurant enthusiast who enjoys trying out the wide variety and quality of food on offer.
The atmosphere at weslodge saloon
Weslodge Saloon mixes quirky American hunting lodge style incorporating animal skulls and wall hangings a sort of “rugged shabby chic”, with a classy contemporary atmosphere. The dress code is smart and the cocktails and accompaniments are made to match. Nicole went to the restaurant with her husband; they had been there previously and were given a tour of the kitchen by the enthusiastic and proud chefs, shown the traditional charcoal grill ovens, the secret to their seriously good steaks. She commented that all the staff were friendly and knowledgeable and eager to discuss the menu.
They arrived at Weslodge Saloon early. It was quieter in the restaurant section, which made it easy to discuss the food and have a chat. Later in the evening it gets far busier with a DJ, for Nicole and her husband it was a great place to sit and have a post meal cocktail…and the cocktails very pretty tasty!
This restaurant is perfect for a nice night out. It falls in the mid to slightly high-end price range. Starters vary between 50-100 AED and a steak priced around 240 AED. But as Nicole said it is “worth it!” and she was even quite impressed with the portion sizes.
The restaurant originated in Toronto and the cuisine is American style meets Canadian. So what exactly does this mean…. basically you will get a great steak and sides with some awesome Canadian delights, such as a delicious and unusual Poutine with lobster.
Nicole started with cocktails, opting for the refreshing cucumber gimlet whilst her husband sampled an orange-spiced gin fizz. In fact the cocktails were so good she decided to stick with them for the whole meal! They were recommended by the waitress to start with scallops ceviche and smokey beef tartar; Nicole described this as a “beautiful” dish. Lovely light plates of food to start before moving onto the much-anticipated mains!
Both chose to go for the tenderloin prime steak. Cooked to perfection on those charcoal grills, “absolutely amazing, nicely seared on the outside and seasoned with Montreal steak spice, really tasty and perfect.” From the interesting selection of sauces they chose the red onion and chili chutney and the surprisingly incredibly tasty bone marrow and sherry vinegar butter. Apparently, the sides are also something to rave about, the simple green bean was elevated and the hazelnut foie gras was described as “absolutely mind blowing.”
After speaking to Nicole I have to admit my mouth was watering! I cannot wait to make my way over to Weslodge Saloon for a steak and cocktail!
Nicole described the Weslodge Saloon as “fantastic” and definitely a great place to spend an evening. The food is delicious and unique and the décor is reminiscent of old school America, with Chesterfield sofas and stunning views over the brand new Dubai canal. It was recently awarded the “UAE best restaurant of the year” by the BBC Good Food Awards.
So all in all for Nicole the Weslodge Saloon was an excellent place to have a great meal and a fun evening…a really “funky place”. Nicole also recommended heading over for their happy hour, a fun way to enjoy their cocktails without breaking the bank!
